Surveyors saving a (tiny) life 💛

Yesterday I went onboard a newbuilding ship for survey, and I had a cute little finding. Close to the accommodation I could hear a kitten meowing. I looked up, at the support of hatch cover there were two small eyes looking at me 🐱

I scanned the area to see if I could see the mother or siblings, but I could not see or hear any. Maybe the tiny one was exploring the hatch cover, and got lifted onboard with it. It could probably not survive long onboard with no food, and a lot of dangerous hot work still ongoing.

What else to do then to bring it to land and take it to our office for recovery. It looked a few weeks old, but healthy and strong. In the office our team came together to fix a box, water and food and let the kitten feel safe.

Luckily one of our kind surveyors saved the day, as a knight in shining white boiler suit. Thank you to Mr Li Jun and his family that opened up their hearts and home for the tiny one, we hope that this will be a successful story 💛

Normally as a DNV surveyor our daily work is to manage risks and to prevent any lives are lost onboard ship. It felt good that this day for our survey, we could directly save a life 🛟

What peculiar findings have you had onboard a ship?

About the author (the surveyor)

My name is Nadine Halvorsen, I have working 11.5 years in the maritime industry. First as design approval engineer for machinery, and for the last 2.5 years I switched from office to shipyard working as a newbuilding surveyor at site. I am passionate about the core of class role; safeguarding life, environment and property. This also includes animal lives, before I started to work in DNV I volunteered 6 months at a chimpanzee animal rescue center in the jungle of Cameroon. During my daily life, I try to contribute at the small things that I can do make it a better world for us all.
